FAQ
What exactly does a Portfolio Finishing School entail?
Our program is tailor-made to empower designers to refine and re-envision their portfolios. Each designer is unique and so are the needs of each portfolio. We begin with a strategic kickoff session helmed by a portfolio expert to chart the best course forward.

The most common 4 issues that we see and help tackle include:
  • Curating Case Studies: Selecting impactful case studies is crucial for catching a recruiter's eye. Avoid common missteps like trendy app redesigns, projects based on shaky concepts, or those not aligned with your desired design position. We assist in handpicking compelling case studies, refining existing ones, and crafting new showcases to let your talent stand out.
  • Subpar Case Study Writing: Frequently, designers present case studies that are poorly structured or too long (most recruiters spend >3 minutes on your portfolio), lack user-centric focus, overemphasize on either research or visuals, or provide generic insights. Our team helps identify errors and works with you structure and tailor your case studies.
  • Balancing UX and UI: Often, designers excel in either UX or UI but might overlook the importance of the other. A robust UX can be overshadowed by lackluster UI, while an impeccable UI is undermined without a solid UX foundation. We ensure your UI hits every pixel precisely and guide your UX to be unshakeable and stand up to design interviews Q&As.
  • Poor Portfolio: Think of your portfolio as its own pivotal case study. Some fall into traps like having text that strains the eyes, underwhelming mockups, or other visual oversights. Our dedicated team collaborates with you to iron out these wrinkles, ensuring your portfolio truly reflects your capabilities.
Our programming offers exclusive 1:1 guidance, primarily via Zoom, but also in-person for those in the New York vicinity.

Beyond refining your portfolio, we grant designers the unique opportunity to work on an additional case study. This involves collaborating with a prominent real-world client, all while under the expert guidance of our seasoned team.
What kinds of designers does your program cater to?
Our team boasts a diverse range of expertise, from brand designers to product designers and beyond. While our program is particularly attuned to product designers, we've guided designers from varied disciplines. If you're uncertain about compatibility, don't hesitate to connect with us.
Do I need prior experience?
Unfortunately at this time, we're not a replacement for a design bootcamp or university program. Having some design experience, whether via a program or self-taught, is ideal. If you're unsure if you'd qualify, don't hesitate to reach out.
How much does Nen Camp cost and how much time is spent?
Each portfolio is unique and comes at different stages. Our team does a free portfolio review to provide feedback and also evaluate what an engagement might look like in order to craft a successful portfolio. We'll provide a quote after completing a portfolio review.

All engagements are generally done over 2 weeks and require 2-8 hours of work per day depending on the engagement level.

Designers holding a full-time job can complete the program over 4-6 weeks.
Do you offer a free portfolio review?
Absolutely! To assess your aptitude and experience for the program, a portfolio review is essential. Thus, it makes sense for us to take a few more minutes to offer feedback (for free!) Although we strive to give video feedback and engage in a Q&A session, we sometimes can only provide written feedback instead.
How many designers do you work with at once?
A standout portfolio is a labor of love. To guarantee exceptional quality, we collaborate with just one or two designers at a given time. Additionally, we offer select client-facing project opportunities. Nen Camp operates on a first-come, first-served basis for qualified applicants.
